1. Is there a sin that cannot be forgiven? Matthew 12:31, 32 NKJV
“Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the , it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
The grace of God has made ample provision for “every sin and blasphemy” to be forgiven. No matter how dark the crime or wicked the deed, God’s love is ready to forgive the repentant sinner who comes to Him. The only sin that can’t be forgiven is against the Holy Spirit. This sin is of such a nature that there is no possibility of it being forgiven.
2. What two groups of people exist before Jesus returns? Revelation 22:11, 12 NKJV
“He who is , let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is , let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still. And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to everyone according to his work.” Before Jesus returns, the gospel goes to the world warning people of the beast and his mark (Revelation 14:6-12). Every person is made aware of the issues surrounding the beast’s plan to change the law of God. During this time every person will make their decision for or against Jesus. There is no neutral ground. When Jesus returns, people will have either accepted salvation or have committed the unpardonable sin. Jesus referred to these two groups when defining the unpardonable sin. He said, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad” (Matthew 12:30). These two groups are being formed right now. This is why it is important that we know how to identify this sin so we can be sure not to commit it. Since Jesus says that the unpardonable sin is a sin against the Holy Spirit, we can understand the unpardonable sin by identifying the work of the Holy Spirit.
3. What is the first work of the Holy Spirit? John 16:13 NKJV
“When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all “
The first work of the Spirit is to guide us into all the truth of God. In order to be saved, we need to recognize chat we are in bondage to Satan and he has blinded our minds to the light of truth (1 Corinthians 4:4). It is the Spirit that leads out of darkness and into the light of truth. The unpardonable sin results when we reject the work of the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
4. What truth does the Spirit guide us into?
a. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your is truth.” John 17:17 NKJV
b. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the , the truth, and the life.’” John 14:6 NKJV
c. “Your is truth . . .All Your commandments are truth.” Psalm 119:142, 151 NKJV
The Spirit guides us into all truth by revealing the teachings of the Holy Word to us. Jesus is the center of all truth. We find eternal life through accepting Him as our Savior and Lord. The Spirit also guides us into the truth of God’s law and teaches us how to live an obedient Christian life.
5. What does truth do for us? John 8:32 NKJV
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you .”
Satan’s specialty is lies. He lied to Adam and Eve when he told them God didn’t really mean they should obey His commandment to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Satna is the father of lies (John 8:44) and ever since the Garden of Eden, he has lied to mankind with the intent to get us to sin against God. The Spirit counteracts the devil’s lies by showing us the truth. When we accept the truth of Bible teachings, we are set free from the devil’s lies.
6. How do people sin against the Holy Spirit in the last days? 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NKJV
“The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deceptions among those who perish, because they did not receive the of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had in unrighteousness.”
The devil works in the last days to deceive people to love his lies more than they love God’s Bible truth. He entwines his lies into every area of our life, so that his lies seem more pleasurable than following Bible truth. We commit the unpardonable sin if we choose to cling to sin rather than to confess and forsake it while accepting Bible truth. If we choose to continue in the lies of Satan, God will give us over to Satan to be deceive by the antichrist and his lying signs and wonders. (See also Hosea 4:6).
7. What does the Spirit do when He leads us into all truth? John 16:8 NKJV
“And when He [the Holy Spirit] has come, He will convict the world of , and of , and of .”
When we see the truth taught in the Bible, the Spirit convicts us of our sin, of righteousness, and of the judgment that holds us accountable. How does the Spirit do this? To convict us of sin, He reveals to us where we have broken God’s law. “Sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4, KJV). The apostle Paul said, “I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ‘You shall not covet.’” (Romans 7:7).
The Spirit also convicts us of the judgment and penalty for sin. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Fortunately, the Spirit doesn’t leave us in a state of hopeless despair. He shows us how to obtain righteousness. He defines righteousness for us: “All Your commandments are righteousness” (Psalm 119:172). And He tells us that “the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:4). Through the conviction of the Spirit and our positive response to Him we are born again and are given eternal life. Then the Spirit writes His law on our heart so that it is the natural outworking of love for God that inspires a servant-life of obedience (Hebrews 10:15, 16; John 14:15).
8. How do we sin against the Spirit’s convictions?
“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” John 3:19 NKJV
“Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, “We .” Therefore, your sin remains.’” John 9:41 NKJV
The best time to act on the Spirit’s guidance into truth is as soon as we learn something. To delay is dangerous. Jesus said, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light” (John 12:35, 36). We sin against the Spirit when we see the light and refuse to obey it. Because we don’t confess and forsake the sins pointed out by the Word, our “sin remains” and is therefore unforgiven. “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).
9. What other work does the Spirit do? 1 Corinthians 12:13 NKJV
“For by one Spirit we were all into one body.”
The Spirit of God leads us to take a stand for God and to be baptized into one body of believers. God’s Spirit in the last days is restoring the truths of God’s Word that were lost during the Dark Ages (Acts 3:19-21). As people respond to the teachings of God’s Word, Jesus says, “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16). In the last days, God is uniting His people in one fold that is dedicated to heeding the Word of God.
10. What happens when we resist the guidance of the Spirit? Ephesians 4:30 NKJV
“And do not the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
The Holy Spirit is sorrowful when we resist His work to guide us into all truth. We see something of God’s sorrow in the grief that King David felt when his son, Absalom, was lost. “Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: ‘O my son Absalom-my son, my son Absalom, if only I had died in your place! 0 Absalom my son, my son!’ ” (2 Samuel 18:33). However, if we surrender to God and follow His truth, Jesus said, “There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10).
11. What does resisting the Spirit do to us? 1 Timothy 4:2 NKJV
“Having their own seared with a hot iron.”
The Spirit convicts us in our conscience as He enlightens it with truth (John 8:9). When we are stirred and made uncomfortable by the Word of God, it is a sign that the Spirit is speaking to us. The only safe path to find the peace of God is to heed the voice of the Spirit in His Word. On the other hand, if we resist conviction, we sear our conscience and harden our heart so that it becomes more difficult, and then impossible, to hear conviction again. We can quiet our conscience by resisting the Spirit, but the peace we obtain is the peace of Satan and not the peace of God.
12. What is the devil’s favorite word? Acts 24:25 NKJV
“Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, ‘Go away for now; when I have a time I will call for you.’”
The devil’s favorite word is “tomorrow.” Satan knows that if he can get a person to delay obeying the convictions of the Spirit that they will sear their conscience and be given over to him. This is why he gets people to procrastinate decisions for God. God, on the other hand, urges us to act now. “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). No matter how wicked our sins, there is pardon for them. The unpardonable sin, however, is any sin that is not confessed and forsaken. This hardening of the heart against the teachings of the Word and the Holy Spirit is not a one-time act. It is the result of a gradual progression in which the convictions of the Holy Spirit are ignored.
13. Will God accept us when we turn from our sin and come to Him? John 21:21, 22 NKJV
“Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this ?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remains till I come, what is that to you? You Me.’ “
The apostle Peter’s story is full of encouragement. Even though he denied the Lord three times during Jesus’ trial, God’s grace won Peter back and brought him to repentance. When Jesus restored him to full discipleship, Peter asked Jesus what would happen to John? Jesus told Peter that he was not to be concerned with others, but was to follow Him. In the same way, when the Spirit of God is leading us, we can be tempted to wonder about others. Why don’t they share our convictions? Should I wait for them to see what I see? Jesus tells us as He told Peter, “It doesn’t matter what others are doing. You follow Me.”
God is “longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Our Heavenly Father is doing everything He can to save every one of His wayward children. Yet if we stubbornly choose to resist His calls through the work of the Holy Spirit, God will respect our choice and leave us to the inevitable results of our chosen life of sin. Let’s choose today today never grieve the Holy Spirit by the choices we make.
